A string consists of a metal core (usually steel wire) and includes a wire that wraps around the core. When you play a guitar, bass, or other stringed instrument, uncoated strings quickly accumulate grease, dirt, hand sweat, and dead skin between the windings. Uncoated strings also accelerate metal corrosion, and dead, dull strings are bound to affect your playing.
Elixir strings, on the other hand, have a patented fluoropolymer protective coating added to the strings. The coating creates a protective barrier between the string and the environment. Because the entire string is coated, the spacing between the windings is protected. As you can see from the photos, after a few strums, the windings of the uncoated strings were torn and corroded, while the Elixir strings remained unscathed and as good as new. The result: Musicians who use Elixir strings tell us that they last 3 to 5 times longer than uncoated strings. So you have less time to get frustrated with changing strings and more time to play with passion.
Elixir strings are the only superior brand of strings that are fully coated over the entire string. Take a closer look at the picture above showing the condition of your strings after 15 hours of use. You can see that the protective coating over the entire surface of Elixir strings effectively prevents foreign objects from getting between the windings. Other coated strings do not offer the same superior protection and therefore allow grease to build up between the gaps, resulting in reduced sound quality.
