1. The earliest “Philharmonic Society”
The founding of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London in 1813 marked the first musical organization to use the word, which exists today.
At the time of the founding of the Royal Philharmonic Society, there were no permanent orchestras in London, nor were there any systematic performances of symphonic or chamber music. Thirty previously competing players, united by their love of music, formed a private association to promote high standards of instrumental performance.
Over the next two hundred years, the association has contributed greatly to the advancement of the musical arts.
It commissioned a large number of works from Europe's leading composers, including Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Mendelssohn's Fourth Symphony, Dvorak's Eighth Symphony, and Saint-Saëns' Third Symphony, all of which have gone on and on.
2. The earliest “Philharmonic Orchestra”
The first philharmonic orchestra was the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1842, and the name “Philharmonic” began at that time and has been used ever since.
